Demographics of India
Adapted from Wikipedia Β· Discoverer experience
India is the most populous country in the world, with a population of over 1.428 billion as of April 2023. This means that about one in every six people on Earth lives in India, making it a very large and important country. India recently became more populous than China, which used to be the most populous country.
India is a relatively young country, with a median age of about 29.8 years as of 2024. This is much younger than China, where the median age is around 40.2 years. About 68% of India's people are between the ages of 15 and 64, which creates a big group of people who can work and help the country's economy grow.
India's population has more than doubled since 1975, growing from about 600 million to over 1.4 billion today. However, the rate of growth has slowed down a lot. In the 1970s and 1980s, the population grew by about 2.3% each year, but now it only grows by about 0.89% each year. Experts think India's population will reach about 1.7 billion by the year 2050.
India is also a very diverse country, with thousands of different ethnic groups and people who speak many languages. There are four major language families in India: Indo-European, Dravidian, Austroasiatic, and Tibeto-Burman. There are also special language groups like Nihali and Burushaski, as well as smaller communities such as Anglo-Indians and Siddi.

The following table shows estimates of India's population (including areas now called Pakistan and Bangladesh) from very old times up until 1820. It includes guesses and growth rates from five economic historians, along with interpolated guesses and overall aggregate averages.
Historical population (10,000 BC - 1820 CE)
Population of India over time
India's population has changed a lot because of people moving in and out, new inventions, and changes in society. Below is a table of guesses about India's population from very old times up to 2021:
Estimated Population of India (10,000 BC β 2021)
The population grew from the South Asian Stone Age in 10,000 BC to the Maurya Empire in 200 BC at a faster rate over time. Then the growth slowed down in the classical era up to 500 AD, and stayed about the same during the early medieval era up to 1000 AD. The growth rate went up again in the late medieval era (during the Delhi Sultanate) from 1000 to 1500.
Under the Mughal Empire, India had a big increase in people and money because of new ways to farm that made more food. About 15% of people lived in cities, which was more than in 19th-century British India and Europe at that time. Some guesses by Abraham Eraly and Paolo Malanima have been questioned by Tim Dyson, who thinks the numbers might be too high and guesses that fewer people lived in cities.
Under Akbar (who ruled from 1556 to 1605), the cities in the Mughal Empire had up to 17 million people, more than in Europe. By 1700, Mughal India had 23 million people in cities, more than British India had in 1871. Nizamuddin Ahmad (1551β1621) said that under Akbar, Mughal India had 120 big cities and 3,200 smaller towns. Some cities had between 250,000 and 500,000 people, with big cities like Agra (in Agra Subah) having up to 800,000 people and Dhaka (in Bengal Subah) having over 1 million people. Mughal India also had many villagesβ455,698 of them by the time of Aurangzeb (who ruled from 1658 to 1707).

The total fertility rate is the number of children a woman has on average. It comes from good data for many years. Sources: Our World in Data and Gapminder Foundation.
Life expectancy from 1881 to 1950
The population of India under the British Raj (including what are now Pakistan and Bangladesh) based on censuses:
Studies of India's population since 1881 have looked at the total number of people, how many are born and die, where people live, how many can read and write, the difference between life in the country and in cities, big cities with a million people, and three cities with more than eight million people: Delhi, Greater Mumbai (Bombay), and Kolkata (Calcutta).
Death rates went down between 1920 and 1945, mostly because of medicines that help people not get sick. Some people thought this happened because of colonialism, but experts say this is not true.

Ethnic groups
India is home to many different ethnic groups, each with its own culture, language, and traditions. The largest group is the Indo-Aryans, making up about 78% of the population, followed by the Dravidians at around 19.6%. Other groups include the Austroasiatic, Tibeto-Burman, and several smaller tribal groups. These groups live in various parts of India, adding to the country's rich cultural diversity.
Population size and structure
Main article: List of States and Union Territories by demographics
India covers only 2.41% of the world's land but is home to over 18% of all people. In 2001, most people lived in about 638,000 villages, with only a small part living in more than 5,100 towns and over 380 urban areas. By 2011, fewer people lived in villages, and more lived in towns and cities. India's population became larger than the whole continent of Africa in 2010, but Africa's population is growing very fast and may pass India's soon.
