The economy of the Washington metropolitan area is very important and includes Washington, D.C., and its surrounding areas in Maryland, Northern Virginia, and Jefferson County, West Virginia. In 2022, this area had the fifth-highest gross metropolitan product in the United States, worth $541 billion. This means it is one of the wealthiest areas in the country.

Washington, D.C. makes up about a quarter of the area's economy, but northern Virginia has the largest share at over 45%. The area also has offices for many big companies from other countries, like Volkswagen, Rolls-Royce, Airbus, Nestlé, Ethiopian Airlines, and Lidl.
