The Judo competition at the 1992 Summer Olympics featured fourteen weight classes, with seven for men and seven for women. The men's classes were the same as those used since 1980. This event was special because it was the first time women could win official Olympic medals in judo. Women had participated in judo as a demonstration sport in 1988, but 1992 was their first chance to stand on the podium with medals.
