Streets named after Martin Luther King Jr. can be found in many cities of the United States and in nearly every major metropolis. Other countries, such as Italy and Israel, have also honored him. The first street in the United States named in his honor was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Chicago in 1968.

As of 2019, there were over 1,000 streets around the world named after Martin Luther King Jr. Many of these streets are located in states that were part of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. This shows how important his message of peace and equality continues to be.

Alabama

Many cities in Alabama have streets named after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. For example, in Andalusia, a road is called the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Expressway. In Atmore, there is a street named Martin Luther King Avenue. Auburn has a section of its road called Martin Luther King Drive. Other cities like Bay Minette, Dothan, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Opp, Prichard, Scottsboro, and Selma also have streets, avenues, or expressways named to honor Dr. King. In Selma, Sylvan Street was renamed Martin Luther King Street in 1976 to remember his work for civil rights there.

Alaska

Anchorage has a street named Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. It is about 1.19 miles long and runs from Elmore Road to East Tudor Road. The idea to name a street after King started in the late 20th century. At first, some people wanted to rename part of 9th Avenue, but the city voted against it. Later, in 2006, the city approved making a new street to honor King. The street opened in 2010 and serves as a reminder of King’s work as a leader for civil rights. In 2020, there were plans to extend the avenue further to Piper Street.

Many cities in Arizona have streets named after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. For example, in Eloy, a part of West Second Street is now called Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street. In Glendale, Maryland Avenue between 91st and 95th Avenue was renamed Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in 2016.

Other cities with streets named after him include Maricopa with M. L. K. Jr. Boulevard, Mesa with Martin Luther King Jr. Way, and Phoenix, where a long stretch of Broadway Road was unofficially renamed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Sierra Vista has Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, and in Tucson, you can find M L King Jr. Way near the UA Tech Park.

Arkansas

Many cities in Arkansas have streets named after Martin Luther King Jr. In Bentonville, you can find S.E. Martin Luther King Jr. Pkwy. In Fayetteville, Sixth Street was renamed to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Forrest City changed Honeysuckle Lane to Martin Luther King Drive. In Hot Springs, parts of US 270 and US 70 are called the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Expressway. Jonesboro renamed Commerce Drive to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in 2019. California

Many cities in California have streets named after Martin Luther King Jr. In Bakersfield, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard runs from California Avenue to Brundage Lane. Chico has Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, which goes north to south. In Fresno, South Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard starts at California Street and runs south.

Hayward has Martin Luther King Drive, running from Cannery Park to Winton Avenue. In Long Beach, Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue runs between East 7th Street and East 21st Street. Los Angeles changed Santa Barbara Avenue to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in 1983. This street often shortens to "King Blvd." or "MLK Blvd."

In Colorado Springs, a part of US Route 24 is called the Martin Luther King Jr. Bypass. In Denver and Aurora, Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard is an important street in the eastern part of Denver. It used to be called East 32nd Avenue and runs through the Central Park neighborhood before ending near Bluff Lake Nature Park.

Connecticut

Some cities in Connecticut have streets named after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In Middletown, there is a street called Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way. In New Britain, a part of Connecticut Route 71 is named Martin Luther King Drive. New Haven has Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, which leads to Yale University. It includes a statue honoring people who moved from the Southern United States to Chicago and a monument for soldiers from World War I. Decatur, East St. Louis, Elgin, North Chicago, Springfield, and Waukegan also have streets named in his honor.

Indiana

Many cities in Indiana have streets named after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In Anderson, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd runs from Brown St in Downtown Anderson to I-69. East Chicago has Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, which used to be called Guthrie Street, running from Michigan Street to Cline Avenue. In Elkhart, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive goes east–west from Main Street to S. 6th Street.

Evansville has Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, which runs from downtown towards the northwest-southeast. The Ford Center is located at the corner of MLK Jr. Blvd and Main Street. In Gary, Martin Luther King Drive runs north–south on the east side of the city. Indianapolis changed Northwestern Avenue to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street in 1985, with ideas to extend it further, possibly replacing Michigan Road. Lawrenceburg has a short Martin Luther King Drive on the northeast side of town.

In Michigan City, Martin Luther King Drive runs east–west from North Karwick Road to US 12 and marks the northern edge of Pottawatomie Park. Muncie has Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard running north–south on the north side of the city. South Bend renamed parts of St. Joseph Street and Michigan Street to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard starting in 2017. Before that, from 2005 to 2017, it followed what used to be Chapin Street.

Iowa

In Des Moines, there are streets named Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway. This road goes from the northern part of the city down to the area near downtown. Later, a new road was built to connect it, making travel easier for people.

In Waterloo, Martin Luther King Jr. Drive connects downtown to neighborhoods and factories on the east side of the town, including places where big companies like John Deere, Ryder System, and Tyson Foods operate.

Kansas

The "Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Highway" includes several roads in Kansas. In Coffeyville, part of US 166 is named for him. In Kansas City, part of US 24 and Fifth Street are also part of this memorial highway.

Louisville has I-65 named the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Expressway, and a short stretch in front of the Romano L. Mazzoli Federal Building is called Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Place.

Paducah has Martin Luther King Drive as part of US 60 Business. Finally, in Somerset, Monticello Street and South Main Street between Oak Hill Road and South Richardson Drive carry the name, including the bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railway.

Louisiana

Minnesota

Minnesota has streets named after Martin Luther King Jr. In Morris, you can find Martin Luther King Jr Drive on the campus of the University of Minnesota Morris. In Saint Paul, there is Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard that passes by the Minnesota State Capitol. This street was renamed in 2002 from Constitution Avenue.

Mississippi

Nevada

In the Las Vegas area, a part of Highland Drive north of Oakey Boulevard was renamed Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in the 1990s. This road links the western side of Downtown Las Vegas to newer parts of North Las Vegas and helps connect the north-central Las Vegas Valley to the famous Las Vegas Strip. It also goes through a historic neighborhood known as "West Las Vegas".

In Reno, a stretch of US 395 was named the Martin Luther King Jr. Freeway in 1998. However, some people say there isn’t enough signage for this name, so many people still don’t use it often.

New Jersey

Many cities in New Jersey have streets named after Martin Luther King Jr. In Atlantic City, Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard runs from the Atlantic City Boardwalk to where it meets US 30 and Route 87. This street used to be called Illinois Avenue and was even part of the board game Monopoly, but it was renamed in the 1980s.

In Camden, Interstate 676 between Interstate 76 and the Benjamin Franklin Bridge is known as the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Highway. There is also a Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in downtown Camden, which runs along the Delaware River with views of Philadelphia.

Other cities with streets named for Dr. King include Elizabeth, where Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. is located across from City Hall. Utah

In Ogden, a part of 24th Street between G Avenue and Jefferson Avenue is called "Martin Luther King Jr. Street" as an honorary name. However, for mailing, people still use the address "24th Street", and the honorary name is not accepted by the postal service.

In Salt Lake City, the street signs for 600 South, which runs west to east, show the honorary name "Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard". But when writing addresses, people still use "600 South", and the honorary name is not accepted by the postal service.

Virginia

Many cities in Virginia have streets named to honor Martin Luther King Jr. For example, in Bedford, there is a Martin Luther King Jr. Bypass that is part of US 460.
