National poet
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
A national poet or national bard is a poet who is seen as representing the identity, beliefs, and values of a particular national culture. Unlike an official poet-laureate, a national poet is recognized by tradition and popular support rather than by a formal appointment. This idea of a national poet became important mainly during the Romanticism period, as these poets helped to strengthen the sense of nationhood in developing nation states.
Most national poets are historical figures, but some modern writers in newer or revived literatures are also seen this way. Even though they are not chosen in an official way, national poets help shape how a country sees itself. Some countries may have more than one national poet, showing that choosing just one is often a simplification. A national poet is usually thought to write in the country's own language and to express its main ideas and spirit.
