Timeline of discovery of Solar System planets and their moons
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
The timeline of discovery of Solar System planets and their natural satellites shows how humans have found new objects in space over time. Each object is listed in the order it was discovered, along with the person or people who found it. Sometimes, the exact moment of discovery can be tricky because it may involve taking pictures, looking at those pictures, and then announcing the find — and these can all happen at different times.
In the past, naming moons was not always done right away. The person who discovered a moon usually got to name it, but sometimes they decided not to choose a name, or they said they would name it later and then never did. For example, E. E. Barnard found a moon of Jupiter named Amalthea but never officially named it, even though many people suggested ideas. Another discoverer, S. B. Nicholson, decided not to give names to two moons he found, Lysithea and Carme, and said they would just be known by numbers like X and XI.
Even from the very first discoveries, naming could be confusing. When Galileo found four moons around Jupiter, he called them numbers, but another astronomer, Simon Marius, suggested names that eventually became the ones we use today. To avoid confusion, the International Astronomical Union — the group in charge of naming space objects — began officially approving names in the late 1970s. But with many new discoveries in the 2000s and beyond, some moons, like Jupiter LI and Jupiter LII found in 2010, are still waiting for their official names.
Key info
In the tables below, moons are shown in bold, planets and dwarf planets that orbit the Sun are shown in italic, and the Sun itself is shown in plain text. The tables are arranged by the date they were announced to the world. Some dates might be a bit tricky because they can mark when the moon was first seen, when it was photographed, or when scientists told everyone about it.
The tables use special symbols to help explain the dates. For example, "i" means the date of the discovery observation, "o" means the date of the first human visual observation through a telescope or on a photographic plate, and "p" means the date of announcement or publication. Sometimes, the exact date isn’t known and is marked with a "(?)". Some moons had tricky histories, being lost and then found again, so they might appear more than once in the list.
Prehistorically discovered
Some planets and their moons were known to people long before they were formally recorded. Ancient observers noticed bright objects moving in the night sky, which we now recognize as planets like Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. These observations happened so long ago that we call them "prehistorically discovered." Their moons, such as Earth's Moon, were also visible to the naked eye and known to early civilizations.
17th century
The 17th century was an exciting time for space discoveries! Astronomers discovered new moons around Saturn, and with each new moon found, they changed the numbering to show the moons' order from the planet. This kept happening until 1848, when the numbering settled down.

18th century
In 1797, William Lassell faced some confusion with the moons of Uranus. He sometimes used different numbers for the moons Titania and Oberon. Later, in 1851, when he discovered two more moons named Ariel and Umbriel, he organized all four known moons of Uranus into a clear order, which is still used today.

19th century
The 19th century saw many discoveries in our Solar System. One important moment was the discovery of a moon named Amalthea. This discovery changed how we name moons. Before this, the Roman numerals used in names changed based on how far the moon was from its planet. But after Amalthea was found, the numbers started to show the order in which moons were discovered instead. This helped scientists keep track of all the new moons they found.

21st century
The 21st century has seen many exciting discoveries in our Solar System. In the 2000s, scientists continued to find new moons orbiting planets using powerful telescopes. These discoveries helped us learn more about the distant objects in our cosmic neighborhood.
In the 2010s and 2020s, this trend continued with even more moons being identified, especially around the outer planets like Saturn and Jupiter. Each new moon added to our understanding of how planets form and how they affect the space around them.
