Venezuela at the 2016 Summer Olympics
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
Venezuela competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 5 to August 21, 2016. This was Venezuela's eighteenth time in a row appearing at the Summer Olympics. The Venezuelan Olympic Committee sent a team of 87 athletes, including 62 men and 25 women, to compete in twenty different sports.
This was Venezuela's second-largest group of athletes ever to go to the Olympics, just smaller than the group that went to Beijing 2008. The team included players for men's basketball, marking Venezuela's return to Olympic basketball for the first time since many years ago. Venezuela also tried sports new to the 2016 Games, like golf and women's beach volleyball, and came back to sports it had not done for eight years, like equestrian, rowing, and taekwondo.
Some well-known athletes from Venezuela were fencers Silvio Fernández and Alejandra Benítez, swimmer Albert Subirats, gymnast Jessica López, boxer Gabriel Maestre, BMX rider Stefany Hernández, and fencing brothers Francisco and Rubén Limardo. Rubén Limardo was chosen by fans to carry Venezuela's flag at the opening ceremony.
Although Venezuela did not win any gold medals at these Olympics, the team came home with three medals: one silver and two bronze. The silver medal went to triple jumper Yulimar Rojas, and the bronze medals went to Hernández and boxer Yoel Finol. Later, Finol moved up from bronze to silver when another boxer was unable to keep their medal.
