The volleyball tournaments at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro took place between August 6 and August 21. Many players from around the world came together to compete in two types of volleyball: indoor and beach volleyball. A total of 386 athletes joined in, with 24 teams in indoor volleyball and 48 teams in beach volleyball.
The indoor games were held at the Ginásio do Maracanãzinho in Maracanã, a special arena made for volleyball. For beach volleyball, the action unfolded at the famous Copacabana Beach, where a temporary Copacabana Stadium was built. This stadium allowed fans to watch exciting matches right by the ocean. Both venues became popular spots for athletes and spectators during the Olympics.

Events
Four different volleyball events took place, and medals were awarded for each one. These events were:
- Indoor volleyball – men with 12 teams and 144 athletes
- Indoor volleyball – women with 12 teams and 144 athletes
- Beach volleyball – men with 24 teams and 48 athletes
- Beach volleyball – women with 24 teams and 48 athletes
Qualification
Each National Olympic Committee could send one men's and one women's team for indoor volleyball, and two men's and two women's teams for beach volleyball.
Men's volleyball
* The Asian Qualifier was combined with the 1st World Qualifier. The best Asian team qualified as the Asian Qualifier winners, while the best three ranked teams except the Asian Qualifier winners qualified as the top three teams of the 1st World Qualifier.

Men's indoor competition
The men's indoor volleyball competition had two stages: a preliminary round and a knockout stage. In the preliminary round, teams were split into two groups of six countries. Each team played every other team in their group once. Points were given for wins and losses, and the top four teams from each group moved to the quarter-finals.

Women's indoor competition
The women's indoor volleyball competition had two parts: a Preliminary round and a knockout stage. In the Preliminary round, teams were split into two groups of six. Each team played every other team in their group once. Points were given depending on the score: three points for a 3–0 or 3–1 win, two points for a 3–2 win, one point for a 2–3 loss, and zero points for a 1–3 or 0–3 loss. The top four teams from each group moved on to the quarter-finals.
