What is Broccoli?

Broccoli is a yummy green plant that belongs to the cabbage family. It has big, dark green flower parts called florets that grow in a tree-like shape on a thick stalk. The leaves wrap around these flower parts. Broccoli looks a bit like cauliflower, but it is a different plant.

Eating Broccoli

You can eat broccoli raw or cooked, and it tastes great both ways! Broccoli is full of good things for your body, like vitamin C and vitamin K. Some ways to cook broccoli, like steaming, microwaving, or stir-frying, help keep its healthy parts better than boiling.

Fun Facts

Broccoli first grew a long time ago in places around the Roman Empire. It was brought to many parts of the world by people who traveled, like those from Italy. Today, many countries grow broccoli, with China and India growing the most. In the United States, most broccoli comes from California.

Broccoli plants grow best in cool weather. They can get about two to three feet tall. When the big flower part is just starting to open, people pick it to eat. After that, the plant can grow more smaller flower parts to enjoy later!
