The Chinese Language

The Chinese language is spoken by more than 1 billion people around the world. It is used by the Han Chinese and many other groups in Greater China, as well as Chinese communities everywhere.

Chinese belongs to the Sino-Tibetan language family. The most common type is Mandarin, spoken by about 800 million people. Other types include Min, Wu, and Yue, like Cantonese. All these types use special sounds called tones.

Chinese is written with characters that show whole words or ideas. These characters have been used for thousands of years.
