Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who grew up near the coast in Liguria. He learned to sail when he was young and traveled to many places. He dreamed of finding a new way to reach Asia by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean.
With help from Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II of Spain, Columbus began his first big trip in 1492. He sailed from Palos de la Frontera with three ships: the Santa María, Pinta, and Niña. After many days, he reached an island in The Bahamas. He called the island San Salvador. This was his first voyage across the Atlantic Ocean.
Columbus made three more trips after this. He explored more of the Caribbean and the coasts of Central America and South America. His journeys helped start new connections between Europe and the Americas. This time is called the Columbian exchange, where plants, animals, and ideas were shared between the two parts of the world.
People remember Columbus for his big voyages. Many places are named after him, like Columbia, South Carolina. Some countries celebrate Columbus Day to honor his journey. His trips changed history and helped shape the world we live in today.
