Who Was Constantine the Great?

Constantine the Great was a very important leader who ruled the Roman Empire a long time ago, from AD 306 to AD 337. He was born in 272 in a place called Naissus, which today is called Niš in Serbia. His father was Flavius Constantius, a soldier, and his mother was named Helena.

A Leader for Christians

Constantine believed in Christianity, which was a new way of thinking at that time. He helped make life better for people who believed in Christianity. In 313, he made a special rule called the Edict of Milan. This rule let Christians practice their religion freely, without fear.

Building a New City

Constantine also built a wonderful new city named Constantinople. Today, this city is called Istanbul and is very important. He made changes to help the Roman Empire stay strong. He even created a new kind of gold coin called the solidus and helped build churches, like the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

People remember Constantine the Great for helping Christians and making big changes that shaped history.
