Welcome to Essex

Essex is a lovely county in the East of England. It is nestled between Cambridgeshire and Suffolk to the north, the North Sea to the east, Kent across the Thames Estuary to the south, Greater London to the south-west, and Hertfordshire to the west. The biggest town is Southend-on-Sea, famous for its long pier.

Essex covers an area of 3,670 km² and is home to around 1.9 million people. The southern part, close to London, is busy with towns like Southend-on-Sea and Basildon. The middle and northern parts are quieter, with towns such as Chelmsford and Colchester. Colchester is very special because it is Britain's oldest recorded town.

Essex has a beautiful coastline of 562 miles, with many bays and inlets. It also has ancient woods like Epping Forest, full of trees and wildlife. Long ago, during the Iron Age, the Trinovantes tribe lived here. Later, the Romans, Saxons, and Vikings all left their marks on the area. Today, Essex is closely linked with London, with new towns and ports growing over time.

Beautiful Places in Essex

Essex has many wonderful places to explore. Audley End House is a grand historic home. Hedingham Castle stands tall and proud. Abberton Reservoir is a large, shiny lake. Epping Forest offers miles of walking trails with tall trees and animals. Southend Pier is very famous for being the longest pleasure pier in the world, listed in the Guinness Book of Records!

There are also many old and special buildings. The old Saxon church of St Peter-on-the-Wall is one example. Brentwood Cathedral is a modern, shiny church. Colchester Castle is a big, old castle, and Colchester Zoo is a fun place to see animals from all over the world.

Fun and Games in Essex

Essex loves sports! The Essex County Cricket Club is very good at cricket and has won many titles. There are also three professional football clubs: Colchester United, Southend United, and Braintree Town. Other sports are popular too, like ice hockey with teams such as the Romford Raiders and the Chelmsford Chieftains, and rugby league with teams like the Eastern Rhinos.

There are also exciting racing events. Essex once had speedway teams, and during the 2012 London Olympics, Hadleigh Farm hosted mountain bike races. There is a horse racing track at Chelmsford City Racecourse and a greyhound racing track at Harlow Stadium.

Learning in Essex

Essex has many schools and places to learn. The University of Essex, started in 1963, is near Colchester, with campuses in Loughton and Southend-on-Sea. Anglia Ruskin University has a campus in Chelmsford. Writtle University College, close to Chelmsford, teaches about land management and related fields. There are also many state secondary schools managed by Essex County Council and the two unitary authorities, Southend-on-Sea and Thurrock.

Essex is a place full of history, nature, and fun. Whether you want to walk in the woods, watch a cricket match, or visit a grand castle, there is something for everyone to enjoy!
