Welcome to Hertfordshire

Hertfordshire, which people often call Herts, is a lovely county in the East of England. It is close to London and has many interesting towns and cities. Some of the bigger places to visit are Watford, St Albans, and Stevenage.

Places to Explore

Hertfordshire has a rich history. In St Albans, you can see old buildings from Roman times, like the town called Verulamium. The name Hertfordshire comes from old words meaning "deer crossing." Many towns here have names ending in "ford" or "ton," which also come from long ago.

The county has beautiful landscapes. In the west, you can find the hilly Chiltern Hills near Tring. There are also many farms and green spaces, like the Metropolitan green belt. The rivers Lea and Colne flow through the area, and there are lovely canals to explore.

Fun and History

Hertfordshire is known for its planned communities. Letchworth was the world’s first Garden City, started in 1903. Later, Stevenage became one of the first towns to grow under a special plan after World War II.

You can visit many interesting places in Hertfordshire. Some famous spots include Hatfield House with its beautiful gardens, Berkhamsted Castle, and the de Havilland Aircraft Heritage Centre. St Albans has a wonderful cathedral and the remains of the old Roman town Verulamium. Walks along The Ridgeway and the Icknield Way are also very nice.

Close to London

Many people who live in Hertfordshire travel to Central London for work. The county has good roads and trains that make it easy to get around. The West Coast Main Line, East Coast Main Line, Midland Main Line, and West Anglia Main Line all pass through Hertfordshire. There are also nearby airports like Stansted Airport and Luton Airport, and the Grand Union Canal runs through several towns.

Hertfordshire is a place full of history, nature, and fun places to visit!
