Portrait of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, a German educator and pioneer of gymnastics.

Friedrich Ludwig Jahn was a teacher who loved gymnastics and wanted to help people stay healthy. He was born on August 11, 1778, in a small village called Lanz in Brandenburg, which was part of Prussia.

Jahn is best known for starting the German gymnastics movement. In 1811, he opened the first outdoor gym in Berlin at a place called Volkspark Hasenheide. He created fun equipment like the parallel bars, rings, high bar, pommel horse, and vault horse that many people still use today.

Because of Jahn’s work, gymnastics became a popular sport for people of all ages. Many gymnastics clubs were named after him, and his ideas spread to places like the United States. Teachers there opened the first gymnastics schools, sharing Jahn’s love for healthy activities.

Jahn passed away on October 15, 1852, in Freyburg. Today, there are memorials for him in many cities around the world, including St. Louis, Vienna, and Cincinnati.
