All About the Beautiful Hibiscus Flower
The Hibiscus × rosa-sinensis is a lovely flower that many people love. It is also called the Chinese hibiscus, China rose, or Hawaiian hibiscus. This flower is part of the Hibiscus group and belongs to the Malvaceae family.
This special flower was created a long time ago by Polynesians. They mixed two different hibiscus plants from Vanuatu and French Polynesia to make it. Today, people grow this flower in warm places because it loves the sun and warm weather.
The Hibiscus × rosa-sinensis can grow as a small shrub or even a tiny tree. It can be as tall as 5 metres (16 feet)! The leaves are shiny and oval-shaped. The flowers are very pretty and come in many colors like red, pink, orange, yellow, white, blue, and purple. They bloom in summer and autumn and can be up to 10 centimetres (4 inches) across.
This flower is very important in some countries. It is the national flower of Malaysia. People there call it bunga raya, which means "great flower." The flower is also loved in Haiti, where it shows the beauty of the land. In Bengal, a part of India, red hibiscus flowers are used in special ceremonies.
People enjoy the hibiscus flower in many ways. The flowers can be eaten and added to salads, or they can be used to make tea. In some places, the flowers are used to decorate hair or even shoes! The hibiscus flower can also help show if a liquid is acidic or basic, which is fun for science experiments.
