Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree National Park is a wonderful place in California. It sits between Riverside County and San Bernardino County. The park is named after the special Joshua tree plant, called Yucca brevifolia. These trees only grow here and in nearby areas.

The park is about 130 miles east of Los Angeles. It is close to nice towns like Indio, Palm Desert, and Palm Springs. People have loved this place for a long time.

Joshua Tree became a special protected area, called a national monument, in 1936. Later, in 1994, it became an official national park. It covers a huge space—bigger than the whole state of Rhode Island. Much of the park is kept wild and natural, called designated wilderness.

The park has two different deserts: the Mojave Desert and the Colorado Desert. These deserts are special because of their height above sea level, or elevation. You can see beautiful mountains, like the Little San Bernardino Mountains, along the park’s edge.

People enjoy many activities in Joshua Tree. You can go camping in nine different places. There are also many hiking trails to explore. Some trails are short, and others are longer, leading to interesting spots like Hidden Valley.

Climbing is very popular here, too. The park has many rock formations that people love to climb. The rocks are not very tall, but they are fun and interesting to climb. You can often do several climbs in one day because the walks to the rocks are short and easy.

Joshua Tree is also a great place for watching birds and stars. Over 250 kinds of birds live in or visit the park. At night, the skies are very dark because the park is far from city lights. This makes it perfect for looking at the stars. In 2017, Joshua Tree was named a Dark Sky Park by the International Dark-Sky Association.

The park is full of life. You can see many animals, like lizards, snakes, chipmunks, and even California ground squirrels. Birds like the greater roadrunner and Gambel's quail are common. The park also has special plants that help animals survive in the dry, hot weather.

More than half of the park is set aside as wilderness. This means visitors must follow special rules to keep nature safe. These rules help protect the beautiful plants and animals that live there. The park has amazing views, like from Keys View, where you can see far-off places such as the Salton Sea.
