Milton S. Hershey

Milton S. Hershey was a kind man who made yummy chocolate. He was born on September 13, 1857, in Pennsylvania to a Mennonite family. He grew up speaking Pennsylvania Dutch and did not go to school for very long.

Milton started by making candy in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He learned from a candy maker and traveled to places like New Orleans and Chicago to learn more. In 1900, he made the first Hershey bars, and people loved them!

Milton built a whole town called Hershey, Pennsylvania for his company. He also cared a lot about helping children. He created a boarding school for children who did not have homes, and it still helps many students today.

During a difficult time when countries did not get along, his company made special chocolate bars that did not melt. These were sent to soldiers far away. Today, The Hershey Company is one of the biggest makers of candy in the world.
