Portuguese Colonization of the Americas

The Portuguese were great explorers from Europe. They sailed to faraway places and discovered new lands. One of their big adventures was exploring parts of the Americas.

Lands in South America

The Portuguese mostly focused on South America. Their biggest area was Brazil, where they landed in 1500. They also had a small part of Uruguay. In Brazil, they built towns and grew crops like sugar cane.

Trying North America

The Portuguese also tried to explore North America. They visited places that are now parts of Canada, like Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia. They set up small fishing camps but later focused more on South America.

Why It Matters

These adventures helped people in Europe learn about new worlds. The Portuguese made maps and shared stories about faraway lands. Their work shaped how countries grew and changed long ago.
