Rio de Janeiro is one of the 27 states that make up Brazil. It is found in the Southeast region of the country. Even though it is small, it is very important for Brazil’s economy.
Fun Facts About Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro touches three other states: Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, and São Paulo. The Atlantic Ocean is right next to it, making for beautiful beaches. The capital city is also called Rio de Janeiro and was once the most important city in Brazil.
The state has 92 towns and cities. Some bigger ones are Rio de Janeiro, São Gonçalo, and Duque de Caxias. Even though it is the smallest state in Brazil’s Southeast area, it is very crowded, with over 16 million people living there.
People and Places
People from Rio de Janeiro are called fluminense. This name comes from a Latin word meaning “river.” Another older name, carioca, is used just for people living in the capital city of Rio de Janeiro.
Rio de Janeiro has many beautiful places to visit. Some popular spots are Christ the Redeemer, one of the seven wonders of the modern world, and famous beaches like Copacabana and Ipanema. The Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden is also a wonderful place to see amazing plants.
Enjoying the Outdoors
The state has a very long coastline, about 635 kilometers. It also has high mountains and special forests called Mata Atlântica. One of the highest points is Pico das Agulhas Negras, which is very tall and exciting to see.
Rio de Janeiro is known for its sports, too! Many people love football, and the state has famous teams like Clube de Regatas do Flamengo. The city also hosted big events like the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Rio de Janeiro is a wonderful place with lots to see and do!
