Welcome to Selangor!

Selangor is one of the 13 states in Malaysia. It sits on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Selangor is a busy and lively place, full of nature and cities.

Nature and Climate

Selangor is home to beautiful tropical rainforests and enjoys a warm equatorial climate. The highest point in Selangor is Mount Semangkok, which is part of the Titiwangsa Mountains. These mountains stretch across southern Myanmar, southern Thailand, and Peninsular Malaysia.

Cities and Towns

The state capital of Selangor is Shah Alam, while Klang is the royal capital. Petaling Jaya is the largest city, and Subang Jaya is also a big city. Selangor is special because it is one of only four Malaysian states with more than one official city.

Selangor is very important for Malaysia’s economy. It has the largest economy and helps a lot with the country’s total GDP. The state is well-developed, with good roads, transportation, and a high standard of living. It also has the largest population and the lowest poverty rate in Malaysia.

  • Selangor’s name might come from the Malay word langau, meaning a large fly. Stories say a warrior resting near the Selangor River was bothered by flies, so he called the place "se langau."
  • The state is known for its beautiful nature spots, such as Batu Caves and the Kuala Selangor Nature Park.
  • Selangor has many places to visit, including the Sepang International Circuit, where big car and motorcycle races happen.

Selangor has many interesting places to explore. You can visit bright lights at I-City in Shah Alam, the big National Zoo of Malaysia (Zoo Negara) in Ampang Jaya, and peaceful nature spots like the Firefly Sanctuary. Don’t miss out on trying local foods such as Rojak Klang and Nasi Ambeng!

The coat of arms or state emblem of Selangor. Designed in the reign of Sultan Abdul Samad, the yellow and red symbolises flesh and blood. The crescent and star represent Islam, the State religion. The red spear in the centre with a short kris to the right and a long kris to the left are part of the State regalia. The jawi script writing expresses the State motto meaning "Under the protection of Allah". Below the motto is the broad belt or sash worn at the waist by warriors in the past.
