A map showing which countries were on each side at the start of the Seven Years War in the mid-1700s.

The Seven Years' War was a big time when many countries fought from 1756 to 1763. It happened in Europe, North America, and the Indian subcontinent.

Many powerful countries were involved. The main sides were Great Britain and Prussia against France and Austria. Other countries like Portugal, Spain, Saxony, Sweden, and Russia joined in too.

The war started because countries did not get along well after another war ended. Changes in friendships between countries led to more fighting. Austria and France declared war on Britain.

The war was fought in many places. In Europe, Austria tried to take back a place called Silesia. When the war ended, Prussia kept control of Silesia. The war also affected faraway places. France lost some lands in North America, and Britain grew stronger in India.

In North America, the war is also called the French and Indian War. The land between British and French areas was not clearly marked. France built forts, which worried the British. Important battles happened, like one led by a young officer named George Washington.

Britain and France sent more soldiers to protect their lands. Britain attacked areas like Acadia. Admiral Edward Boscawen captured a French ship. Battles happened at Lake George.

In Europe, after another war, Austria wanted to take back Silesia. Austria made friends with Russia, but France made a secret deal with Prussia. This changed friendships and helped start the war.

Prussia, led by Frederick II, saw chances to grow. Britain made deals to help Prussia. These changing friendships made war almost certain.

The war used guns and older weapons like swords. Soldiers fought in lines with muskets and bayonets. Cavalrymen carried sabres and pistols. Artillery supported attacks on strong points. Wars often centered around taking and holding fortifications.

Many countries joined different groups. Britain and Prussia had smaller German states and Portugal. France and Austria had Sweden, Spain, and Russia for most of the war. Some Native American groups fought with Britain or France.

The war ended with peace treaties. In Europe, Prussia kept Silesia. In North America, France gave most of its lands to Britain. Britain returned some islands to France for fishing rights.

The war changed things for many countries. Britain became stronger but faced new challenges. Prussia grew as a major power. The war also affected places like India and West Africa, where Britain took control of some French areas.

Many stories, films, and games remember the Seven Years' War. Books like The Luck of Barry Lyndon and films like Barry Lyndon are set during this time. Some video games also include parts of the war.
