What is a Viceroy?

A viceroy is a special leader who rules a country or area for a king or queen. The word "viceroy" comes from old words meaning "in place of a king." This shows that a viceroy acts for a king or queen when they cannot be there.

Viceroy jobs were used in many places around the world. In the past, big empires like Spain and Portugal had viceroys to lead faraway lands. For example, in the Spanish Empire, viceroys helped manage huge areas in Europe and the Americas. They made sure things ran smoothly for the king or queen.

In the British Empire, after a big change in 1858, the leader of India was called a viceroy. This person was the main representative of the British ruler in India. They handled important events and met with leaders. Today, some countries still have leaders who act like viceroys, even if they do not use that exact word.

Viceroy jobs were also used in other places, like Russia, France, and even in old Italy. In each place, the viceroy helped the main ruler by leading faraway lands or special areas. This made it easier for the king or queen to control big empires.
