Privacy Policy

Last updated October 10, 2026

Safekipedia is a children's encyclopedia: Wikipedia articles rewritten for young readers. It's built for kids, so it's built to know as little about them as possible. There are no accounts, no ads, and no tracking across apps or websites. This policy covers the website (safekipedia.com) and the Safekipedia app for iPhone and iPad.

The short version

  • We don't ask for names, emails, birthdays or any other personal details to read Safekipedia.
  • In the app, everything about your children (their reader profiles, favorites, quiz scores and reading history) stays on your device.
  • We don't sell or share information, and we don't show ads.
  • Payments go through Apple (app subscriptions) or Stripe and PayPal (website donations). We never see card details.

The app

Kept only on your device

The readers you add (a first name or nickname, an avatar and a reading level), their favorites, quiz results, reading history and reading time are stored on the device and are never sent to us. The parent PIN is stored salted and hashed in the device's keychain. Removing a reader in the Grown-ups area deletes that reader's information; deleting the app deletes everything except a few technical items in the keychain (described below).

Sent to our servers

To show articles, the app asks our servers for them. These requests contain:

  • the article or search words and the reading level (for example “Dolphin, Explorer”);
  • when the app asks for a new article to be written: an anonymous device key created by Apple's App Attest, which proves the request comes from the real app. We keep that key and how many articles it asked for each day, to prevent abuse. It isn't linked to a name, an Apple ID or anything that identifies you.

The app never sends who is reading, reading history, quiz results or favorites.

Kept in the keychain

So the free plan's daily limit can't be reset by reinstalling the app, the list of new articles opened today is kept in the device's keychain, along with the App Attest key identifier. These items stay on the device and can't be read by other apps.

Subscriptions

Safekipedia Plus is sold by Apple. Apple handles payment, the free trial, renewals and Family Sharing. The app only asks Apple, on the device, whether a subscription is active. We don't receive your name, Apple ID or payment details. Purchases are behind the parent PIN.

No analytics or ads

The app contains no advertising, no third-party analytics and no tracking. Links that leave Safekipedia are behind the parent PIN.

The website

  • Settings on your device: the website remembers the chosen reading level and best quiz scores in your browser's local storage. They aren't sent to us.
  • Visit statistics: we use Plausible Analytics, which counts page visits without cookies and without collecting personal data.
  • Bot check: when someone asks for a new article to be written, a Cloudflare Turnstile check confirms it's a person and not a bot.
  • Reports: if you report a problem with an article, we keep the page address, the reasons you picked and any comment you write, to fix the article.
  • Donations: handled by Stripe or PayPal under their own privacy policies.

Both the website and the app

  • Server logs: like most online services, our hosting (Amazon Web Services) records technical details of requests, such as IP address, time and the page requested, for security and to keep the service running. They're kept for a limited time and not used to identify anyone.
  • Pictures: article pictures load directly from Wikimedia Commons, so Wikimedia's servers receive the usual request details (see the Wikimedia privacy policy).

Children

Safekipedia is designed for children and doesn't knowingly collect personal information from them. The only personal detail in the app, a reader's first name or nickname, stays on the device. If you think we have information about your child, write to us and we'll delete it.

Your choices

You can remove readers and their history in the app's Grown-ups area, clear the website's saved settings by clearing your browser's site data, and manage or cancel a subscription in your Apple ID settings. For any question or request, including access or deletion, contact us.

Changes

If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
