Demographics of India

Map showing the most commonly spoken native language in each district of India according to the 2011 Census.

India is the most populous country in the world, with a population of over 1.428 billion as of April 2023. This means that about one in every six people on Earth lives in India. India recently became more populous than China, which used to hold this title.

India is a relatively young country, with a median age of about 29.8 years as of 2024. This is younger than in many other countries, such as China, where the median age is around 40.2 years. Most of India's people are between the ages of 15 and 64, creating a large group of people who can work and help the country's economy.

India's population has grown a lot since 1975, more than doubling from about 600 million to over 1.4 billion today. However, the rate of growth has slowed down. In the 1970s and 1980s, the population grew by about 2.3% each year, but now it only grows by about 0.89% each year. Experts think India's population will reach about 1.7 billion by the year 2050.

India is a very diverse country, with thousands of different ethnic groups and people who speak many languages. There are four major language families in India: Indo-European, Dravidian, Austroasiatic, and Tibeto-Burman. There are also special language groups like Nihali and Burushaski, as well as smaller communities such as Anglo-Indians and Siddi.

The table below shows guesses about India's population (including areas now called Pakistan and Bangladesh) from very old times up until 1820. It includes guesses and growth rates from five economic historians, along with interpolated guesses and overall aggregate averages.

Historical population (10,000 BC - 1820 CE)

Population of India over time

India's population has changed a lot because of people moving in and out, new inventions, and changes in society. Below is a table of guesses about India's population from very old times up to 2021:

Estimated Population of India (10,000 BC โ€“ 2021)

The population grew from the South Asian Stone Age in 10,000 BC to the Maurya Empire in 200 BC at a faster rate over time. Then the growth slowed down in the classical era up to 500 AD, and stayed about the same during the early medieval era up to 1000 AD. The growth rate went up again in the late medieval era (during the Delhi Sultanate) from 1000 to 1500.

Under the Mughal Empire, India had a big increase in people because of new ways to farm that made more food. About 15% of people lived in cities, which was more than in 19th-century British India and Europe at that time.

Under Akbar (who ruled from 1556 to 1605), the cities in the Mughal Empire had many people, more than in Europe. By 1700, Mughal India had many people in cities, more than British India had in 1871. Nizamuddin Ahmad (1551โ€“1621) said that under Akbar, Mughal India had many big cities and towns. Some cities had many people, with big cities like Agra (in Agra Subah) and Dhaka (in Bengal Subah).

Late 19th century to early 20th century

The population of India under the British Raj (including what are now Pakistan and Bangladesh) based on censuses:

Studies of India's population since 1881 have looked at the total number of people, how many are born and die, where people live, how many can read and write, the difference between life in the country and in cities.

Death rates went down between 1920 and 1945, mostly because of medicines that help people not get sick.

Population size and structure

Main article: List of States and Union Territories by demographics

India is a very big country with lots of people. Even though it has only a small part of the world's land, more than 18% of all people in the world live there. In 2001, most people lived in about 638,000 villages. Only a few people lived in towns and cities. By 2011, fewer people lived in villages and more lived in towns and cities. In 2010, India's population became larger than the whole continent of Africa. But Africa's population is growing very fast and might become larger than India's soon.
