Foreign relations of Tanzania

Tanzania, officially known as the United Republic of Tanzania, works with other countries to help keep peace and support people in need. Its first president, Julius Nyerere, was one of the founding members of the Non-Aligned Movement and helped lead important groups during the Cold War era. He worked with other leaders to support ending unfair systems in Southern Africa and helped with peace talks in Burundi.

Today, Tanzania keeps good relationships with its neighbors and works to solve problems peacefully. The country has helped organize peace talks for Burundi and supports agreements to bring calm to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In March 1996, Tanzania, along with Uganda and Kenya, started talks about working together more closely. This led to an East African Cooperation Treaty in September 1999, which aims to bring the three countries closer through sharing resources and building stronger economies as part of the East African Community. Tanzania is also part of the Southern African Development Community.

Tanzania has been a kind host to people who had to leave their homes because of conflict. The country has welcomed refugees from places like Mozambique, the DR Congo, Burundi, and Rwanda. This help is often done together with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Diplomatic relations

Tanzania has diplomatic ties with many countries around the world. These relationships help Tanzania work together with others on important issues.

Bilateral relations

Africa

Tanzania works closely with its neighbors and other African countries. This helps with trade, sharing resources, and solving common problems. The African Union plays a big role in bringing countries together for peace and development.

Americas

Tanzania has friendships with countries in North and South America. These ties help with trade, culture, and working together on global issues. For example, Tanzania and the United States work on health and education projects.

Asia

Tanzania has strong links with many Asian countries. These relationships help with trade, especially in areas like technology and agriculture. Countries like China and India help Tanzania build roads, schools, and hospitals.

Europe

Tanzania and European countries have long-standing friendships. These ties support development projects and trade. The European Union helps Tanzania with programs for health, education, and the environment.

John Magufuli made 10 trips to 8 countries while he was president. He was the first Tanzania president to travel only inside Africa. The president focused on smaller groups and often sent his Vice-President Samia Suluhu Hassan to represent him. He served six years and made fewer trips than any president before him.

All his visits were to meet with other countries, except for one meeting with leaders from the African Union in Ethiopia and another meeting with the East African Community in Uganda.

Samia Suluhu

Samia Suluhu made her first trip outside Tanzania in April 2021 after becoming president on 19 March 2021. Since then, she has been making trips to support Tanzania's place in the world.
