Czech Republic at the 2016 Summer Olympics

The Czech Republic competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 5 to August 21, 2016. This was the country's sixth time taking part in the Olympics after it became its own nation following the split from Czechoslovakia. The team included 105 athletes—63 men and 42 women—who took part in twenty different sports.

The Czech Republic came home with ten medals, which included one gold, two silver, and seven bronze. This made the 2016 Olympics the country’s second most successful, just behind the Atlanta 1996 and London 2012 Games. Some of the medals came from sports like canoeing and tennis, while others were earned in judo, track and field, mountain biking, and rowing.

One of the top athletes was judo champion Lukáš Krpálek, who won the country’s only gold medal in the men's half-heavyweight division. Another great performance came from rower Ondřej Synek, who added a bronze medal to his collection. Flatwater canoeist Josef Dostál helped the team earn two medals, and double Olympic champion Barbora Špotáková made history by becoming the first woman to win three medals in the javelin throw. Mountain biker Jaroslav Kulhavý finished with a silver medal in the men’s cross-country race.

However, for the first time since the 1980 Summer Olympics, the Czech Republic did not win any medals in shooting competitions.

Competitors

The Czech Olympic Committee sent 105 athletes to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This group included 63 men and 42 women who competed in twenty different sports. It was the smallest group of athletes the Czech Republic had sent to the Olympics since it began competing on its own after the breakup of the former Czechoslovakia.

Many of these athletes had competed in past Olympics, and some were returning for their fifth appearance. Notable competitors included Barbora Špotáková in javelin throw, David Svoboda in modern pentathlon, and Miroslava Knapková in rowing, among others. Young athletes like rifle shooting rookie Filip Nepejchal and freestyle swimming teen Barbora Seemanová were also part of the team.

The athletes competed in both track and road events for men and women. There were also field events for both men and women. Additionally, there were combined events including the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon.

Badminton

The Czech Republic sent two badminton players to the 2016 Summer Olympics. Kristína Gavnholt, who had competed in two previous Olympics, qualified for the women's singles event based on her ranking. Petr Koukal qualified for the men's singles event as one of the next highest-ranked players available.

Canoeing

Czech canoeists qualified boats for the Olympics in two types of events: slalom and sprint. They earned spots by doing well in several races leading up to the Games.

Slalom

Czech canoeists could enter one boat in each slalom class after good results at the 2015 ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships. The team members were chosen based on their performances in races in Veltrusy, Prague, and at the European Championships in Liptovský Mikuláš, Slovakia.

Sprint

The Czech team also qualified four boats for each sprint distance at the 2015 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships. They got one extra boat for the men's C-2 1000 m event by finishing high at a race in Duisburg, Germany.

The sprint team was announced on June 7, 2016, and included Josef Dostál, who won a bronze medal in London in 2012.

Modern pentathlon

Czech athletes earned spots to compete in the modern pentathlon at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Defending Olympic champion David Svoboda and a new competitor, Jan Kuf, qualified for the men's event by winning two of the eight spots available for their team at the 2015 European Championships. Barbora Kodedová received an invitation to compete in the women's event. She was one of the highest-ranked athletes who had not yet qualified, based on the World Rankings as of June 1, 2016.

The Czech Republic sent five rowing teams to the 2016 Summer Olympics. They qualified three teams during the 2015 FISA World Championships in Lac d'Aiguebelette, France. Two more teams joined after doing well at the 2016 European & Final Qualification Regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland.

Tennis

The Czech Republic sent eight tennis players to the Olympics—two men and six women. Tomáš Berdych and Jiří Veselý qualified for the men's singles based on their world rankings. Petra Kvitová, Karolína Plíšková, Lucie Šafářová, and Barbora Strýcová qualified for the women's singles. Some players chose to compete in doubles with their partners. Unfortunately, a few athletes could not participate due to health concerns.

Triathlon

The Czech Republic sent one athlete to compete in the triathlon at the Games. Vendula Frintová, who had competed in two Olympics before, was chosen because she was one of the top 40 triathletes in the world at the time.

Volleyball

Beach

The Czech Republic women's beach volleyball team earned a spot in the Olympics by finishing among the top two teams at the 2016 FIVB Continental Cup in Sochi, Russia. The team included London 2012 Olympian Markéta Sluková and her new partner Barbora Hermannová.

The Czech Republic earned a spot for one male weightlifter to compete in the Rio Olympics because they finished in the top seven at the 2016 European Championships. The team needed to choose who would take this spot by June 20, 2016.

Wrestling

The Czech Republic got a spot to send a wrestler to the Olympics because Brazil, the host country, gave up a place. This allowed the Czech Republic to send a female wrestler to compete in the women's freestyle 63 kg event. The spot was given based on results from the World Championships.
