List of United States cities by population
Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience
This is a list of the most crowded cities in the United States. These cities are special because they have the most people living inside their borders. When we talk about a city's population, we mean only the people who live inside the city's official lines. This is different from counting all the people who live around a city in smaller towns or villages.
Cities can change over time. Some grow very big, while others stay about the same size. Knowing which cities have the most people helps us understand where many Americans live and work. It also shows how some places become more popular than others.
The list includes only people who live inside a city's borders. It does not count people who live in the surrounding areas, even if they visit or work in the city every day. This way, each city can be compared fairly, based only on its own population.
50 states and the District of Columbia
This table shows the 346 incorporated places in the United States with at least 100,000 people as of July 1, 2024. These places include cities, towns, and other types of communities. Five states do not have any cities this big: Delaware, Maine, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
The table gives information such as the city's rank, name, state, population in 2024 and 2020, how much the population changed, the land area, how many people live in each square mile, and the city's location coordinates.
The total population of all these big cities in 2020 was about 96.6 million people, which is roughly 29% of the whole U.S. population. Together, they cover about 29,588 square miles (76,630 km2). On average, each of these cities had about 301,765 people and 4,151 people living in every square mile (1,603/km2).

Puerto Rico
The following table shows the five largest municipalities in Puerto Rico with more than 100,000 people as of July 1, 2024, based on estimates from the United States Census Bureau. If these cities were part of the overall list for the United States, San Juan would be the 58th largest city in the country.
The table includes details such as the city's rank, population numbers from 2024 and 2020, population changes, land area, population density, and geographic coordinates.

Other U.S. territories
The United States has several territories, including American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. In these areas, there are no cities that have populations of 100,000 people or more. These territories are special parts of the United States, but they are not states.
Census-designated places
A census-designated place (CDP) is an area where many people live, but it does not have its own city government. The United States Census Bureau uses these areas for counting people during the census, similar to cities and towns.
The following table shows the largest CDPs in the United States with at least 100,000 people, based on the 2020 census. It includes details like the population in 2020 and 2010, how much the population changed, the land area, how many people live in each area, and the location coordinates.
