List of natural satellites

Our Solar System is home to many amazing objects, including eight planets and nine likely dwarf planets. Out of these, six planets and seven dwarf planets have at least 467 natural satellites, which we call moons. These moons orbit around their planets, just like our own Moon orbits Earth.
Some of these moons are very special because they are big enough to be round due to their own gravity. Out of these round moons, most are covered in ice, but not all. For example, Earth’s Moon and Jupiter’s moon Io are not covered in ice. If some of these large moons were not orbiting planets, they might be considered dwarf planets or even planets themselves.
Moons are important because they help us learn more about our Solar System. They can tell us about the history of the planets they orbit and even about the early Solar System. Studying moons helps scientists understand how planets form and change over time.
Classification
Moons can be divided into two groups based on how they move around their planets. Regular moons orbit in the same direction their planet spins and stay close to the planet's equator. Irregular moons have more unusual paths, sometimes going the opposite way or at odd angles. These irregular moons might have been pulled into orbit from space around the planet. Most of these irregular moons are smaller than 10 kilometres, which is about 6.2 miles, across.
Background
The first moon discovered that was not orbiting Earth was found by Galileo Galilei in 1610. He saw four moons around Jupiter, now called the Galilean moons. For the next 300 years, only a few more moons were found. But in the 1970s, space missions like Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 found many more moons. Since the year 2000, big telescopes on Earth have helped us discover even more moons, most of which have unusual paths around their planets.
Moons by primary
Mercury, the smallest planet, has no moons. For a short time in 1974, Mercury was thought to have a moon.
Venus also has no moons, though reports of a moon around Venus have existed since the 1600s.
Earth has one known Moon, the largest moon of any rocky planet in our solar system. Earth also has more than 20 known co-orbitals, including the asteroids 3753 Cruithne and 469219 Kamoʻoaloha, and the occasional temporary satellite, like 2020 CD3; however, since they do not permanently orbit Earth, they are not considered moons. Mars has two known moons, Phobos and Deimos.
Jupiter has 115 moons with known orbits announced; 72 of them have received permanent designations, and 57 have been named. Among them is Ganymede, the largest and most massive moon in the Solar System.
Saturn has 292 moons with known orbits announced; 66 of them have received permanent designations, and 63 have been named. Seven moons are large enough to be round, including Titan, the second largest moon in the Solar System.
Uranus has 29 known moons announced, five of which are large enough to be round. All the moons of Uranus are named after characters from the works of Shakespeare and Alexander Pope.
Neptune has 16 known moons announced; the largest, Triton, is large enough to be round.
Pluto, a dwarf planet, is confirmed to have five moons. Its largest moon Charon is more than half as large as Pluto itself.
Among the other dwarf planets, Ceres has no known moons. Eris has one large known moon, Dysnomia.
Haumea has two moons, Hiʻiaka and Namaka. Makemake has one moon, announced in April 2016.
As of November 2025[update], 471 asteroid moons and 149 trans-Neptunian moons (including those of Pluto and the other dwarf planets) had been discovered.

This is a list of the moons that orbit the planets and the largest possible dwarf planets in our Solar System. The moons are ordered by their official Roman numeral designations. Moons without these designations, because their orbits aren't fully known yet, appear at the end of the list.
The 19 moons that are big enough to be shaped by their own gravity are shown in bold. The seven biggest moons, which are larger than any known dwarf planets, are shown in bold and italic. The time it takes for a moon to orbit its planet can be different from its distance because this depends on both the mass of the planet and how far the moon is from it.
