This is a list of all the countries and special areas in Africa. It includes places that are fully recognized as their own countries, places that are not fully recognized, and areas that belong to other countries but are located in Africa. There are 56 fully recognized countries in Africa, and 54 of them are members of the United Nations. There are also two areas that belong to non-African countries and nine regions that are parts of countries outside of Africa.
Some places like Malta and parts of France, Italy, Portugal, and Spain sit on the same land as Africa, even though they are usually thought of as part of Europe. Egypt is also considered an African country, even though a small part of it is in Asia.

The following two entities have declared themselves to be sovereign states and are in control of some territory but have limited recognition from other states. Neither entity is a member state of the United Nations, although the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic is a member of the African Union.
