List of the largest Protestant denominations

This is a list of the largest Protestant denominations, showing big groups of Protestant Christian churches around the world. It includes groups that have many members, such as those with more than 50 million people, and gives information about how many people belong to each group.

In early 2026, there were about 637 million Protestants and 426 million Independents, who are mostly Evangelicals, Charismatics, and Pentecostals who do not call themselves Protestants. In 2010, the biggest international groups made up more than half of all Protestants worldwide, and the biggest groups in single countries included over 200 of the world’s 800 million Protestants.

Some very large groups have members who may also belong to other groups, which makes them different from groups that are only in one country. Also, some national groups, like the Protestant Church in Germany, include different types of churches such as Lutheran, Reformed, and United churches, even though they are counted as one group.

In 2020, the world's largest Protestant groups included many people. There were about 644 million people who were Charismatics and Pentecostals. About 387 million people were Evangelicals. Other big groups included nearly 97 million Anglicans, over 84 million Baptists, and many more in various other groups. These numbers show just how many people around the world follow these different Protestant traditions.

Lists of the largest Protestant bodies

Transdenominational bodies include people from all Protestant groups who take part in movements that go beyond their own branch, such as Evangelicalism, the Charismatic movement, or the Neo-charismatic movement. These movements are found around the world.

International bodies usually bring together one Protestant branch that shares common founders, beliefs, and history. Some of the largest international bodies are the World Communion of Reformed Churches, the World Assemblies of God Fellowship, the Anglican Communion, and the Lutheran World Federation, each having more than 70 million members.

National bodies are churches that mainly operate in one country. Examples include the United Methodist Church, which is mostly in the United States, and the Church of Christ in Congo, which is only in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Other large national bodies include the Church of England, the Three-Self Patriotic Movement, the Assembleias de Deus, and the Protestant Church in Germany, each with more than 20 million members.

Non-national bodies are denominations that work worldwide and cannot be grouped with national bodies. Many of these are Pentecostal churches. The list includes the largest Adventist church, the Seventh-day Adventist Church, the largest Methodist church, the United Methodist Church, the largest African initiated church, the Zion Christian Church, and the second largest Pentecostal denomination in the world, The Pentecostal Mission (TPM).
