An urban area is a human settlement where many people live close together and there are many buildings and services. These places have a lot of people living in them, which we call high population density. They also have special infrastructure like roads, schools, hospitals, and homes, all part of the built environment.

Urban areas start to form through something called urbanization. We can call them cities, towns, conurbations, or suburbs. In the study of cities, called urbanism, urban areas are different from places in the country, known as rural areas like villages and hamlets.

Long ago, during the urban revolution in the 4th millennium BCE, early cities helped start human civilization. Today, planning cities and using natural resources have changed the world around us, creating a big human impact on the environment.

Recent historical growth

Earth's land use in 2019, built-up area being estimated as 1.5 million square kilometers

In 1950, about 30% of the world’s population, or 764 million people, lived in urban areas. By 2009, more people lived in cities than in the countryside for the first time. In 2014, roughly 53% of the world’s 7.3 billion people, or 3.9 billion, lived in urban areas. Experts predicted that by 2050, about 68% of the world’s people would live in cities, with most of this growth happening in Africa and Asia.

During this time, the size of urban areas grew quickly. From 1992 to 2015, urban areas expanded from 33 million hectares to 71 million hectares. This growth used up valuable land, including farmland, forests, and shrubland.

Urbanization

Main article: Urbanization

Urban areas with at least one million inhabitants in 2025

Urban areas grow and develop through a process called urbanization. We use these areas to study things like how many people live close together and how cities spread out. You can find urban areas in many places, such as the United States, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Japan, Australia, and others where lots of people live in cities.

A metropolitan area is bigger than an urban area. It includes the city, the land around it, and smaller towns that are connected to the city. The city is usually where most people go to work, and people travel there from surrounding areas.

Definitions

Different countries and groups use various ways to describe urban areas, which makes it hard to compare them. The United Nations shares data about cities and rural areas but depends on each country's own definitions.

In European countries, an urban area is defined by how the land is used, with buildings close together without big gaps. They often use pictures taken from space to decide the edges of these areas. In countries that are still growing, they also look at how many people work in farming or fishing to decide if an area is urban.
