Shooting at the Summer Olympics

Adapted from Wikipedia · Discoverer experience

The official flag of the Russian Olympic Committee used in the 2020 and 2022 Olympic Games.

Shooting sports have been a part of the Summer Olympics since the very first modern Games in 1896. They have appeared in almost every Olympic event, missing only in a couple of years. These events test the skill and precision of athletes from around the world. Competing in shooting requires focus, practice, and a calm spirit, making it an exciting and important part of the Olympic tradition.

Summary

Shooting sports have been a part of every Summer Olympic Games since the first modern Olympics in 1896. The only exceptions were the games held in 1904 and 1928, where shooting was not included. These events test the skill and precision of athletes from around the world.

Events

Shooting has been part of the Summer Olympic Games since the very first modern Olympics in Athens in 1896. Some early competitions had unusual rules, like shooting live pigeons or dueling. Over time, these changed to use clay targets instead. The International Shooting Sport Federation was created in 1907 to help make the rules more uniform.

Shooting events were held in many Olympics over the years. When shooting returned in 1932, there were only two events, but the number grew over time. By the 2000–2004 games, there were seventeen events, though the 2008 games had only fifteen. Women began competing more in these events, with the first women-only events starting in Los Angeles in 1984. Since then, many women have won medals in shooting.
